Strengthen Your Resume

Your resume offers you your first chance to wow potential employers. It is in your best interest to take the time to whip your resume into tiptop shape. Here’s our take on what works:

  1. Customize! Many jobseekers are looking into more than one area or field for their dream jobs and to save time and effort they make a send-to-all type of resume. While this may seem like the smart thing to do, it isn’t. Generic resumes tend to be too extensive, too general or just plain vague. Chances are, the only place your resume will be going is in the trash. What you need to be is focused. Tailor your resume to suit the company or industry that you’re applying for. Highlight your skills that you believe the company will value the most. You want the hiring manager to take one look at your resume and think, “This is the person I’m looking for!”

  2. Personalize! Your resume isn’t just a list of facts. It is a representation of yourself and what you have to offer to the company. Describe your accomplishments and the impact you made on your previous job. Show us the results. And how you are different from other jobseekers and why you are the person that we have to have. But remember, stick to the truth!

  3. KISS! Keep it short and simple. While your resume has to show us you are the best person for the job, remember it is not a dossier. The resume’s main purpose is to get us interested enough to pick up the phone and schedule an interview with you. Remove any unnecessary information. Delete anything that does not have anything to do with the position that you’re applying for.

  4. Proofread!  Typos show a lack of attention to detail. Make sure there are no misspelled words or grammatical errors on your resume. And double check the contact information you wrote down. We can’t ask you to come in for an interview if you give us the wrong number. Ask a friend or someone you trust to go over what you did. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes could spot something you’ve missed.

Now that you’ve got a beefed up resume, you’ve just upped your chances of getting that interview.
